Leading By The Numbers
Part 2 of 3
This is part two of a three part series on Taking Control Of Your Business Using The 3-Step TMI System. To recap, TMI stands for:
In this article I’ll cover #2 Measure and the next article will be on #3 Improve.
Part II: Measure – once the numbers have been tracked, you can measure them against previous numbers to see where the business stands. Tracking can’t begin to show a pattern or tell a story until the numbers have been tracked over some period of time – enough time to have several time periods to compare to each other. Listed side by side you begin to gain some insights.
Measuring over time provides us with helpful patterns and trends we can use to make sound decisions about the future. But in order for that to happen, we have to pay attention to the numbers. Doing this on a regular basis is best to form a good habit of it.
I usually recommend weekly monitoring and measuring for most clients who aren’t used to regularly tracking and reviewing their numbers. For those who have already incorporated it into their routine, I recommend monthly monitoring and measuring, instead of weekly.
Gathering the numbers and putting them in the spreadsheet on a weekly or monthly basis provides a format that is easy to look at and can be sorted many different ways. You may find other creative ways of tracking your numbers. Some people like to put the on a whiteboard where everyone can see them. Experiment to see what works best for you. The most important part it to just do it and do it consistently.
In the next article, I’ll cover the final step, Part III: Improve.
