Elevate Your Game and Elevate Your Business By Upleveling Your Leadership Skills

As a small business entrepreneur, it’s crucial to constantly strive for growth and success. One way to do this is by emulating the mindset and strategies of successful CEOs. By understanding and implementing their unique approach to leadership, you can elevate your game and elevate your business.

I’ve had the rewarding experience of working with some exceptional CEOs in my career in operations management and as an executive business coach. Here’s what I’ve learned about how to lead like a CEO in order to get your business to the next level:

LOOK TO THE FUTURE

CEOs have a clear vision for where they want their company to be in 1-year, 3-years, 5-years, 10-years and beyond. These short-term and long-term visions are essential for pacing and evaluating progress. CEOs know they can’t get there in one giant leap and therefore don’t try to. As a small business owner, it’s important to have a similar mindset and plan for growth. Set ambitious but achievable goals for the future and constantly work towards them, while tracking progress along the way.

MOTIVATE YOUR TEAM

A CEO’s job is not just to lead the company, but to inspire and motivate their team toward achieving the short-term and long-term visions. As a small business entrepreneur, it’s important to surround yourself with the right people and communicate your goals to them. Give them the tools and support they need to succeed and trust in their abilities to get results; nurture a high-performance team.

MAINTAIN THE BIG PICTURE

CEOs have a unique ability to see the entire organization from a birds-eye view. As a small business owner, it’s important to not get bogged down in daily tasks when your focus needs to be on the highest priority goals for getting to the next level. If not you, who else is going to focus on the big picture perspective? To achieve this, prioritize important details and delegate or outsource tasks that take you away from focusing on your strategy for growth.

EMBODY YOUR CORE VALUES

Every business has a reason for existing, and it’s important to always keep that in mind. A CEO never loses sight of the core values that define their company. They become those values and rarely deviate from being the embodiment of them. As a small business entrepreneur, it’s important to keep your company values top of mind and allow them to assist in your decision-making. When making decisions, ask yourself if and how they align with both your vision and values. If you find that they don’t align, that’s your sign to adjust or rethink decisions.

COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY

Effective communication is key for any CEO. As a small business owner, it’s important to not only be a good communicator but to also control incoming communications and have uninterrupted time to work. By setting clear expectations and providing clear guidance, small business leaders build trust, foster collaboration, and create a culture of ownership leading to a business that doesn’t always need them to be around in order to succeed.

THINK STRATEGICALLY

A CEO always has a plan and thinks strategically. As a small business owner, it’s important to be proactive and have ideas ready for any sudden changes in your business, in the market, and in the economy. By thinking ahead and considering all possibilities, you’ll be prepared for any challenges that may arise and are less likely to get caught off guard. Staying ahead and not having to play catch up means you can outperform competitors who haven’t taken this approach.

By cultivating these traits and mindsets in your business, you’ll see immediate benefits in your performance, growth, and operations. Elevate your game and elevate your business by leading like a CEO.
