Are You Pushing or Leading?

Pushing is done from behind so obviously it’s not leading; anything done from the back doesn’t put you in the lead.

Leading is done from the front. Leading is done by:

  • creating an example
  • embodying leadership
  • embodying the things you want to lead others to do or be
  • getting there yourself first

Be the leader who has already arrived at the destination. This doesn’t have to mean that you’re perfect and it doesn’t have to mean that you’ve arrived at your final destination. But it does mean that you have arrived at a part somewhere on the way to the destination and this is the part you’re trying to lead other to.

So what happens when you don’t feel that you’ve arrived but yet you are put in the position of leading others? It means you get busy getting there first. You can’t lead people somewhere you’ve never been.

Not being able to lead people somewhere you’ve never been can cause you to stop trying to lead and start pushing to get better results. You’re not sure how to get there, so what do you do?

You can take baby steps. You can lead people to point one while you are still trying to get to point 2.

Heck you can lead people to point 1A while you are still trying to get to point 1B. It can be broken down. But essentially whatever little step you’re asking others to take you are going to have a hard time leading them there if you’ve never been there yourself or don’t know how to get there.

Sometimes the leader is only a microsecond ahead of everyone they’re leading, but you get my point, they are still in the lead. They are the ones who are leading. As the leader of your business, this is where you want to be. In the front – leading and going first.
